Famous 'Musicals' and 'Comedy Classics' Lift Patients' Spirits
Patients and relatives can sometimes struggle to find different things to talk about each day.
If the hospital day room has a DVD player, ask if you can bring in some 'favourite' DVDs. A 'classic' film or TV programme can bring huge pleasure to everyone.
If the hospital doesn't have this facility, ask if you can bring one in. It may have to be PAT tested by the hospital electricians (Health and Safetly). We bought my mother's ward a new one, and after it passed the test, it went on to provide endless hours of entertainment for many grateful patients and relatives.*
Older patients, who may have had strokes or suffered some form of memory loss, may find that their memories are triggered by hearing famous musicals and many, who have limited speech, will find they can sing along to songs or theme tunes they know so well.
If appropriate, why not encourage several patients to watch together. By asking everyone to choose their 'favourites', it can be possible to create a rota of films using the local DVD rental store or DVDs from home.
Some hospitals already have a great collection.
With the nursing staff's permission, it may be possible to bring in 'popcorn' and other treats associated with the cinema. I did it our my mother's ward, and everyone seemed delighted.
