Entertainment possibilities in the local community for older people in care or at home

Many older people find it difficult to occupy themselves during the day, especially if they live alone. However, if you know where to look, there are often many activities on offer, it's just knowing how to find them.

Here are some general suggestions.

Ask a relative or friend to visit or rIng your local library. They should have a list of what's on in the area.

Get someone to visit, ring,or look up on the internet your local district or town council. They should have a community information database listing the activities available in your area that suit your specific needs.

The WRVS operates a Good Neighbour scheme that offers a variety of areas of support from helping out with tasks in the home to organising outings. Their national site will direct you to activities in your area.

Age UK have branches throughout the country and should have a detailed knowledge of activities in your area

Local churches, synagogues, mosques, temples and other religious centres should be able help make some suggestions

University of the Third Age also offers a huge range of activities for older people and have branches in most big towns.

Derby and Joan Clubs often operate in towns. Your local library or coucil offices should have information about the nearest club.

If you are caring for a loved one who has cancer or other life threatening conditions, you may find that your local hospice offers a variety of support that can be of help to the whole family. Contact your GP or look up your local hospice on the internet

These are just a few ideas. We add to them all the time. Many of the activities listed in this section of the KISSING IT BETTER website (hit the clown icon on the home page for more details) are suitable for older people. If the activity you find doesn't operate in your area, try and find out, via your library or local council offices, if there is anything similar in your region.

Finally, if you know of a brilliant scheme operating in your area, tell us about it and we'll add it to the site. Contact us via the home page or email: mail@kissingitbetter.co.uk
