Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center's beautiful grounds cheer patients during treatment

Patients in the cancer centre at a hospital in Wisconsin are made comfortable in recliners and have a view of wooland and a pond though floor to ceiling windows. This gives the room a feeling of space, brightness and airiness. The idea is that, by making the centre more appealing, they can reduce the patient's anxieties. Watch the slide show for more wonderful 'views'

Although most hospitals cannot offer such a wonderful view. it is important to think about a patient's surroundings. It may be possible to move their bed or chair closer to a window with an interesting outlook. Failing that, some long-stay patients may enjoy a short time in a busier part of the ward. This may be the day-room or the dining area. If a seat by a window isn't possible, think about offering them something that interests them. It may be the chance to watch their favourite television programme, a DVD or simply a chat with someone on the ward who has similar interests. It may take a few moments to work it out, but the rewards can be huge.

All this may seem obvious, but believe me, it doesn't happen on many wards and often, elderly people who have problems communicating are left for hours simply staring at a wall.

For now, enjoy the views in Wisconsin .....and be inspired. The NHS may not have the money to do the same, but with a little ingenuity, someone might come up with something just as good.... but not so expensive.
